1984 ( 1984 ) - 3 stars out of 5 stars

Finally the latest version released in 1984 itself. Was that supposed to be relevant??
Anyway, while this version's +'s are that its in color and more violent and has SEX,its not really any better than the 1956 film.It does mostly stick to the same story except for 2 difference that cancels out the +'s to leave it still 2 stars short. Those differences are that the woman, Suzanna Hamilton as Julia, is more concerned about sex and doesn't even go to that important meeting between  John Hurt as Winston Smith, and Richard Burton as O'Brien, and O'Brien is not really a part of the story TILL that meeting which then begs the question, why trust him??The acting is ok but if you thought the story might be updated, you'd be wrong, its still retro. So I would recommend the the 1956 version if you ask.Still this is OK and I believe was Mr.Burtons last film.Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary below.

Rabbit-Proof Fence 2002 - 5 stars out of 5 stars

Hitler and Apartheid are not the only horrors of white supremacists. This film is based on a book by the daughter of one of the films characters. So points of view can be emphasized. What cannot be exaggerated is that this policy of preventing a "third"race and protecting them from themselves, cannot. It was Government policy(Australia) till 1970 !!!!!
I had heard of this policy but never have i understood it till I saw this film.I am shocked and appalled this happened in the land of "Crocodile Dundee"a film I have yet to review. Is it as bad as "slavery"?You can be the judge. What it surely was is misguided elitism and religious dogma that didn't end with the Crusades.Islam zealots kill the body and a zealot Christian separates people which kills their heart. To the film.Well really  what it represents, not the way it was represented in this film, that really matters and why I gave it a perfect must see rating.Released in 2002 and running 94 minutes it can be tedious at times and the idea that these 3 girls could survive in the "outback"in 1931,for 1500+ miles is kinda farfetched.Major flaws in a film. Then why see it? Because its so stirring  despite the flaws, and the three young native actress are beyond belief and  well it was so sad and yet uplifting the power of the heart. What the film is really, to me,a warning that at anytime fanatics in the name of ANYTHING can be as damaging over time as Hitler was.Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary below.

Western Australia, 1931. Government policy includes taking half-caste children from their Aboriginal mothers and sending them a thousand miles away to what amounts to indentured servitude, "to save them from themselves." Molly, Daisy, and Grace (two sisters and a cousin who are 14, 10, and 8) arrive at their Gulag and promptly escape, under Molly's lead. For days they walk north, following a fence that keeps rabbits from settlements, eluding a native tracker and the regional constabulary. Their pursuers take orders from the government's "chief protector of Aborigines," A.O. Neville, blinded by Anglo-Christian certainty, evolutionary world view and conventional wisdom. Can the girls survive? Written by <jhailey@hotmail.com>

1984 ( 1956 ) - 3 stars out of 5 stars

This first theatrical version of Orwell's nightmare future follows the 1954 BBC telecast faithfully up to the casting of Donald Pleasance in a role that combines 2,including his, from that telecast. However it is still terribly dated and only the addition of a film feel over the stage/TV blandness earns it a 1/2 star more, but it still loses 2.The film runs 90 minutes and also is in B&W.Because the story is almost exactly the same,I found it interesting that in the BBC show, money was "dollars"but in the american film it was "shillings".Odd since London is the setting for both. That aside the casting of Edmond O'Brien and Jan Sterling and Michael Redgrave are a wash to the first films cast.Still recommended mainly for film history buffs and real fans of "deep thought",no light entertainment here.Full film link follows the picture and a IMDB summary below.

The 300 Spartans 1962 - 4 stars out of 5 stars

When I reviewed 2006's "300"I noted it made me forget this 1962 version that runs 114 minutes, but now that I have seen it again, its just as good. The real differences are style vs storytelling. In this version Richard Egan fits as  King Leonidas  and  David Farrar  as Xerxes the Persian king are the main characters and you do "get"them as well as old school story telling of epic battles and moral codes. The film is full of great one liners but my favorite is"Who can understand the way of the gods? They create lovely girls and then turn them into wives."OH so true !!!!!
It doesn't have the FX and flash of the 2006 version but it is it equal in grander and lore.Highly recommend for old school epic fans and 1 star off for the datedness. Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary below.

Essentially true story of how Spartan king Leonidas led an extremely small army of Greek Soldiers (300 of them his personal body guards from Sparta) to hold off an invading Persian army now thought to have numbered 250,000. The actual heroism of those who stood (and ultimately died) with Leonidas helped shape the course of Western Civilization, allowing the Greek city states time to organize an army which repelled the Persians. Set in 480 BC. Written by Jes Beard <jesbeard@bellsouth.net>

Nineteen Eighty Four - AKA 1984 - ( 1954 ) BBC TV Movie - 2 1/2 stars out of 5 stars

There are 3 versions of George Orwell's mindcontroling horrific vision of the future that I am aware of.I shall try to review all here. The first is a rather poor play like version done by the BBC back in 1954 for a TV anthology series.VERY dated and relying solely on dramatic dialogue,it is a 50/50 proposition at best. Most today will find it unwatchable. However if you can stand that ancient form of viewing, the scary story of "Big Brother"and the"Though Police"show through as well as the end of individual thought and the new collective of subservient purpose. It stars Peter Cushing and Donald Pleasance and Andre Morell and Yvonne Mitchell.I recommend for those who want to see the early adaptation of this classic novel, and it seems quite fair to the ideal of that book,as well as those with historic interest of cinema in general. It runs 147 minutes and is in B&W and I posted a link to the entire film as I could find no trailer, below the picture.A short IMDB summary is below. We also sometimes forget that in this vision"they"try to create a new language or"new speak"to help dull our senses. No greater reason to read and stay aware especially in these troubled times. It may be 30 years after 1984,but the message still scares !!!!

A man who works for 'The Party' (an all powerful empire led by a man known only as 'Big Brother') begins to have thoughts of rebellion and love for a fellow member. Together they look to help bring down the party.

Men In Black 3 - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 stars

This 3rd installment makes me want to revisit the first two.I was not a big fan initially of this franchise because there is no science, none.In this film there still is really none BUT the mere idea of time travel and secrets revealed as well as sentimentality trumps the lack of science.Add to that the star power and presence of the 3 leads,Will Smith,Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin, there is more than "science"to see this film.So if you can handle that negative and just enjoy it for what it is,sentimental fluff for a evening viewing, iffy for under 12,then by all means check it out.Released in 2012 and running 106 minutes,I took the 1 and 1/2 off for the lack of science and silly aliens.Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary below.

Agent J travels in time to M.I.B.'s early days in 1969 to stop an alien from assassinating his friend Agent K and changing history.

The Package 1989 - 4 stars out of 5 stars

Think John McClane of "Die Hard"which was reviewed on this blog,as a sergeant in the US army.Thats who Johnny Gallagher might as well be.Stranger still both films were release the same year,1989 and perhaps this film suffered from the computation, much the same as "Logan's Run"suffered from the same release year as "Star War"both of which are also reviewed on this blog. What ever the reason, this is a fine film for those who loved cold war conspiracies. The casting is also fine starring Gene Hackman as Sgt.Gallagher and the lesser know but he steals every scene he's in, Dennis Franz as Lt. Milan Delich.
Tommy Lee Jones as the mysterious Thomas Boyette, also always punk like  John Heard as Col. Glen Whitacre and even  Joanna Cassidy as Eileen Gallagher shine.Interesting enough a very small role totally out of character YET showing she is more than a "wet dream"tough girl  Pam Grier as Ruth Butler.
The story is sort of well, lame,in that its a  plot to kill someone big by a shadow group with types from both sides in the"cold war"thats the reason I took 1 star off. However for 108 minutes film with such a good cast and those old day feelings of you knew who the enemy was,its a small price to play.So check out the trailer URL after the picture and a IMDB summary is below.

Experienced Green Beret sergeant Johnny Gallagher is escorting a prisoner, Airborne Ranger Thomas Boyette, back to the US, but Boyette escapes and Gallagher must risk life and limb to catch him.

Once Upon A Time In The West - 4 1/2 stars out of 5 stars

To truly enjoy this movie, one must understand what a "Spaghetti Western"is.Do yourself a favor and look it up as there is a slight difference of opinion in different quarters,as to what the genre truly is.Released in 1968 and running a bit long, thus the 1/2 star off, this is my favorite of that genre. The actors are by far the best ensemble for any film in this genre.OK while Bronson and Robards and Cardinale own their roles,a special comment MUST be made on Henry Fonda being cast as he said in a interview and I quote on being a bad guy,"A son of a bitch".Yes that was a key to grab you back in 1968.Fonda had made a career by that time as a  everyman, good guy and the shock value is enormous. But beyond the casting, its a love story in a movie as well as TO the western movie by those Italians who like to take it slow and easy in both love and storytelling.A stark difference to the American lack of patience. It makes for a truly consuming movie experience IF you give it your time. Its got its share of shocking violence by is still somewhat tame by todays F/X shock and awe standards.I LOVE THIS FILM.Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary below.Bucket list film.

Blacula - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 stars

Remember the term" blacksploitation"? Well this film released in 1973 and running 93 minutes is my favorite from that genre. There are 3 issues I have with this film, thus sadly,1 and 1/2 stars off.First, poor acting except for the lead, William Marshall as Blacula.Second it is VERY dated. Finally, some might find the political incorrectness very offensive.Still,as a Vampire film, and one that has strong black characterizations, its pretty damned good. What I liked was the spin that puts a proud black man in a no win situation and yet,as foul as the deeds are that he forced to commit,he still keeps his dignity. You might also enjoy the still to this day, bumbling LA police needing a black doctor to set them straight. On the  blacksploitation side it has enough pigs greased to keep the audience happy as well as a funny bit with a cab driver. The best of this genre and a naughty favorite of mine. She can't act worth laic but with a body hers  Vonetta McGee as Tina, doesn't have to.Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary below.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy 2011 - 2 1/2 stars out of 5 stars

Cold war dramas are usually a favorite of mine, however in this case it was far to slow moving.Maybe it's the British way, like a Agatha Christie novel, but thats why I only give it a 50/50 rating. The 2011 release that runs 127 minutes has a outstanding cast headed by Gary Oldman that was enough for me to sit through it and give it the iffy recommendation. However, the younger you are,the more boring this film will seem.Do you like  Agatha Christie novel's?That will be your guide.Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary below.

Rambo 2008 - 3 stars out of 5 stars

Having seen the earlier Rambos and yet to review,I was surprised how true to the earlier 3 films this one was dispute the fact that  Sylvester Stallone ,who IS John Rambo ,is actually older than ME !!!! I guess being from NYC like me,is the secret. That all said, this 2008 release that runs 92 minutes, suffers from the same weakness as all the others, good finally wins over evil no matter the odds and its always easy to tell the difference. Thus the 2 stars off.Thats also the strength of the franchise. We want a righteous  winner when all is said and done, and in Sly we trust !!! In this installment the bad guys are the government of Burma.Rambo, against his better judgement, helps a group of christian missionaries bring humanitarian aid to the rebels because of the "words"the really HOT blond ( Julie Benz as Sarah) in the group tells him,ha,ha.
But does that REALLY matter,HELL NO.What matters is the christian missionaries are captured by really bad government forces and when a group of diverse mercenaries are sent to release them,Rambo is recruited to guide them.Thats all you need to know as the grand escape provides all the bloody justice you both need and want.Trailer URL follows the picture.BLOODY good ride and NOT for impressionable kids.

Skyfall - 4 stars out of 5 stars

The latest installment of this 50 year old franchise with Daniel Craig as Bond is worthy of its forefathers. The story is fair, acting good and enough of the wild and crazy action + beautiful women you expect, though less sex, from a Bond film.Released in 2012 and running a bit long at 143 minutes,I gook the 1 star off for the length and the formula story. However there is a sort of mid life crises sneaking into Bonds life which is compelling for my age group. So if your a Bond fan,a must see,if new to the genre,be entertained !!Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary is below.

The Jazz Singer 1980 - 4 stars out of 5 stars

Strange that I would recommend a "remake"albeit, updated significantly but I guess its because I never saw the legendary 1927 original film that's famous as the screens first"talky"and infamous for its star Al Jolson singing in"blackface".
This version has the lead,Neil Diamond,in blackface early in one scene and given the context,I'm sure you'll agree its not condescending or insulting at all.In fact, its vital to the story on a level showing how he writes music for a all black group he grew up knowing as kids, who in turn, get him his first break as a singer to perform what he has written. So much for historical political correctness. The movie has a wrap around song called" Coming to America"that is still for me,to this very day,a immigration anthem for all to this country of immigrants.Mr Diamond musical strength has always been performing and in this movie that talent carries through when ever he sings, even Hebrew songs of faith. What is not fair is to rate his acting against his co-star the legendary Laurence Olivier. In fact,I actually thought the understated performance of  Catlin Adams as Rivka Rabinovitch ,Diamonds characters wife,is almost Shakespearian tragic. The rest of the cast is good enough for a film that is really a story between father and son that all of us men have suffered through in one way or another.
Now to the story, update or not.Besides the conflict between father and son,it does show the urban link of the times, blacks and jews friends because the wasps of the time would have nether.Perhaps poorly shown, but at least attempted, the music group gets a break in a all black uptown nightclub. Finally they succeed but ONLY as Diamonds backups, not on their
own.Diamond shortens his name as a songwriter from Rabinovitch to Robin.Too often these things happened and for someone who grew up back in the 60's it rings sadly true.My only complaint with the story is how it glosses over the eventual split between Diamond and his wife,or should I say, what happened to her afterwards.Diamond fares well enough because there is another waiting to take fair Rivka's place and thats sad.Lucie Arnaz fills that roll but is no Rivka.I also thought that Diamonds finding himself country phase was a little weak.
Still its a strong story and a worthy film experience.
So I take 1 star of for Diamonds acting not being the equal of his singing performances and the shaky attempt to describe the black and Jew coalition of the day.The 1980 release runs a bit long at 115 minutes.Trailer URL follows the picture.IMDB summary below.

Out Of Africa - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 stars

Today its a different time of instant gratification and I want what I want when I what it and just won't wait !!!Sadly thats why I had to take 1 and 1/2 stars off this 1985 release that runs quite long at 161 minutes. Most of todays younger viewers will get bored and those who never read won't appreciate the way this story unfolds.Thats a shame because it is truly worth waiting for.My only issue is I always find it hard to understand the troubles of life and loves of the privileged. In a story of this time and setting, sadly, thats the only way it can be told, through their eyes, and I have accepted that.Oh and the acting?? Did I say Meryl Streep and Robert Redford ??So if you like a long sprawling landscaped love story in a exotic time and place,by all means, see it.Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary is below.

55 Days at Peking - 4 1/2 stars out of 5 stars

Wonderful action epic from 1963 starring Charlton Heston and Ava Gardner and the cast of thousands as they say.Based on a real siege during the"Boxer rebellion"from 1899 to 1901 in which China attempted to force the occupying Imperialist powers out,its a stirring action film that takes great pains not to politicize  the time or pass judgement.Rather the film tells the classic old chestnut of love and loss set against the backdrop of war. What makes the film relevant today is the mere mention of historical events that seem long forgotten but shouldn't be.How many youngsters even know Beijing was once known as Peking or that the US had a presence there so many years ago?? Now at that larger than life actor Heston, and well sit back and enjoy. The only flaw is the old Hollywood prejudice against casting Asian's actors in leading roles.A film about China without Asian actors in key roles is laughable at times. The film runs 153 minutes but is not boring at all.Only the lack of asian actors costs 1/2 star. There was a minor story about a young Chinese orphan girl and they did cast Lynne Sue Moon. She was so good it just highlighted the silliness of not casting the major characters with asians.I could not find a trailer BUT again, the FULL MOVIE URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary below.

A Few Good Men - 5 stars out of 5 stars

Sometimes a movie tells a story of fiction that grows into a sad painful truth of sorts years later. This 1992 release that runs 138 minutes is such a film. Our once proud military is awash in sexual harassment charges, suicides in unmentionable rates that cannot be believed, and mistreatment of prisoners on many levels.YET we need these men,you want these men, there are those trying to kill us and they are the tip of the shield. You and I can waste our time on silly pursuits like ME writing this blog and YOU reading it because of these men.NEVER forget that.
This film is a story about the death of a substandard marine and those responsible for his death, yet in the words of his Col."Tragic though his death was,it saved lives"
Back when this movie was made it might have been seen as a Vietnam era hangover of military abuse. No,today we can see it as a warning that our freedoms must be guarded against any and all enemies both foreign and domestic.
In this film the"bad guys"are really the good guys who are corrupted or as the old saying goes,"absolute power corrupts absolutely"We must hold our leaders, even the military,to the highest standards even as we entrust our very lives to them.
The crime in this film takes place in  Gitmo. Yes before it was a detainee camp,it was a forward operating base where the US faced a hostel military. The only other such place at that time was the DMZ in Korea. What is truly on display in the ability of our forces to follow orders and how those who give them can be carried away on there own power trips.
When  Jack Nicholson as Col. Nathan R. Jessup is telling  Tom Cruise as Lt. Daniel Kaffee, about how he must follow the orders of a  woman of higher rank,  Demi Moore as Lt. Cdr. JoAnne Galloway ,yet he doesn't because HE outranks her,he goes off on a tangent about getting a BJ from a superior officer in the morning.Sexual harassment in front of HER.A+++ acting throughout the film.
I have never been a big courtroom drama fan,but this film is more about the good and the bad of the military and those who serve.HOORAH !!! Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary below.

In this dramatic courtroom thriller, LT Daniel Kaffee, a Navy lawyer who has never seen the inside of the courtroom, defends two stubborn Marines who have been accused of murdering a colleague. Kaffee is known as being lazy and had arranged for a plea bargain. Downey's Aunt Ginny appoints Cmdr. Galloway to represent him. Also on the legal staff is LTJG Sam Weinberg. The team rounds up many facts and Kaffee is discovering that he is really cut out for trial work. The defense is originally based upon the fact that PFC Santiago, the victim, was given a "CODE RED". Santiago was basically a screw-up. At Gitmo, screw-ups aren't tolerated. Especially by Col. Nathan Jessup. In Cuba, Jessup and two senior officers try to give all the help they can, but Kaffee knows something's fishy. In the conclusion of the film, the fireworks are set off by a confrontation between Jessup and Kaffee. Written by Matt Curtolo <curt@epix.net>

Shot Through The Heart - 5 stars out of 5 stars

There was a civil war in the US 150 years ago,no one truly remembers it.There is the terror of sniper combat so well displayed in  the film"Enemy at the gates"that was reviewed on my blog, but it was uniformed soldiers. We begin to understand sectarian violence from Iraq and Afghanistan BUT in a white European country,in our own lifetime, before 9/11 changed our focus on everything? No I doubt anyone truly understood it or does to this day,but since WW11 the first war crimes trials were held because of it. The country of  Yugoslavia, was a patch work of forced uniting of diverse Balkan peoples of different ethic and religious backgrounds that fell apart when the strongman holding it together,Marshal Tito, died.  Its capital city was Sarajevo, home to a Winter Olympics Game in the recent past, and a shinning example to the world that a different sort of new kind of capitalism/socialism,much like what China IS succeeding with today, could work in Europe. Tito's death changed everything to again remind us all that old hate and grudges lie just below the surface and rise like puss from a wound and fester to infect and kill us all.
This film doesn't shed much new light how that came to pass in what was Yugoslavia, but it does focus a narrow light on what people living a very similar life as we in the US live, can fall into when "wounds"are not treated and how fragile our life styles really can be. In a sense this is very personnel human horror story without zombies.HBO films made another film worthy of all our attention to understand what modern war in cities and sectarian violence can be right here if we are not smart and allow ourselves to let the mess our country is in continue. The families and people in this film are like us.Middle class, educated and see their life's decend into a living and in many cases dying hell.  Congress and the President should see this picture ,as a teachable moment, before they forget how fractured our own country has truly become.Like most docudramas the story is a copulation of many events to give a picture of a event that is not rational but that did happen.released in 1998 it runs 112 minutes.Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary is below.

The horrors of war are examined from the view points of lifelong friends (Linus Roache, Vincent Perez), who end up on opposing sides in the war in Sarajevo. One is an expert marksman, who trains the snipers used to terrify the city and the other becomes a freedom fighter, who rejects his friend's offer to gain an escape from the city. As might be expected, the two eventually have to face-off against one another. Written by John Sacksteder <jsackste@bellsouth.net>

Soylent Green - 4 1/2 stars out of 5 stars

Forget what you think your being told about "green house gasses"and "Global warming"Back in 1973 this 93 minutes film put out a horrific scenario that is worse than what is talked about even today. It's the 99% vs the 1%  but 99 has lost and don't even know the price of that loss. Its amazing how few folks today even have heard the term and know what it means. The only fault with this film is the dateness of the filming itself, not the really scare inconvenient truth. And that truth I dare not speak. The cast is legendary headed by Charlton Heston and Edward G. Robinson. The story………….

Rush Hour 3 - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 stars

Although Jackie Chan has no writer or director credits on this film I'm sure he had some input because there are a few obvious homages to classic pictures in this film.My favorite is the old whose on first routine from Abbott and Costello,in this case, whats my name, and even a few "Godfather"a film reviewed on the blog, references amongst others. That was the main enjoyment for me,spotting them.As a buddy film it has the off the wall, they can't possibly get along opposites needed to pull it off, and there does seem to be a chemistry between Chan and Chris Tucker. However I had to take 1 and 1/2 stars off because showing Paris is not a excuse for no real storyline, and, some of the stereotyping even upsets me.Yet at times it can be hilarious.I mean Chan ordering fried chicken and sweet potato pie and tucker going for Chinese "take out" after a argument,as comfort food,is pretty funny for me.I recommend with a warning,it can be very PC incorrect,I don't mind, but some of you might.I have to revisit the first 2 in this series and I understand a 4th is on the way.Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary below.

Bushwhacked - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 stars

Funny and silly film in both good and bad ways, thus the 1 and 1/2 stars off.First the good.Family fun and as the film goes on there is a real bonding of characters and you find your self totally invested in the films outcome.Plus I always liked Daniel Stern and you gotta love the "Saturday Night Fever"homage,a film also reviewed on this blog, at the beginning of the film. Now the bad,it took too long to get to the good place midway through the film, and the films stupid name, its not some crazy  slasher film, and some outlandish plot lines. All in all,far better than most of the comedy crap today and a rare film kids can watch.Released in 1995 its only 90 minutes. The "birds and the bees"explanation was funny !!!! Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary below.Enjoy.

Fierce Creatures (1997) - 3 stars out of 5 stars

As I stated in the past comedy is a tough review and this mix of US and UK humor proves the point and is also the reason to see the brave attempt.I took the 2 stars off because most of the humor is dialogue and the mix is stirred not shaken or is it?? Released in 1997 and only running 92 minutes its worth the view for the casting alone. Two monty python alumus and a older but still hot Jamie Lee Curtis  and even a better then usual Kevin Kline do the story about a US company and a UK zoo a good turn mate.Trailer URL follows the picture and a rather long IMDB summary below.Better than 95% of the drug high sex crap made today.Oh there is sex but not overt nudity. The brits are more subtile than that.

A massive corporate conglomerate, Octopus Inc., run by a shrewd and cruel tycoon named Rod McCain, purchases a UK-based leisure company, and also the failing London Marwood Zoo. To bring more business to the zoo, Octopus hires a new manager, Rollo Lee, who promptly comes up with a way to increase profits-do away with all the animals except for the ferocious ones. This new Fierce Creatures Policy shocks the Marwood zookeepers, led by the unendingly talkative Adrian "Bugsy" Malone. Eventually, Rod McCain's son Vince, along with the up-and-coming business executive Willa Weston, take control of the zoo and revoke the Fierce Creatures Policy. Vince instead comes up with many under-handed and vicious schemes to attract customers-unauthorized celebrity endorsements, shoddy, overpriced zoo merchandise, and using robotic animals instead of real ones. However, Vince is also stealing from the zoo's funds, and when his father finds out, he rears to turn the zoo into a Japanese-owned golf course.... Written by Josh Martin <jmartin@netarrant.net>

Mortel Transfert - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 stars

I  found this film by accident and watched it.Its pretty good in a adult "French "film sort of way and not really a fetish film in the sense we usually use.My take is a very adult continental view of wacky humans trying to get through the day and those who "help"those who need it,really need as much help from THEM as well.
The psycologist  didn't kill her,her husband did ( or did he ??) but he is as messed up as she was and the film takes on a sort of "Rashomon"quality, which was reviewed on this bog, with the murder being the center and far more graphic than the scenes in Rashomon were.
Mind you thats a simplistic view by me to try to explain it as I have never seen so intriguing a film before and again it illustrates just how "provincial"we can be in the states.Released in 2001 it runs 122 minutes.I took 1 and 1/2 stars off for the extreme adult content which limits the audience and the subtitles,it is a French film after all,and it does drag a bit explaining things.Trailer,in French,URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary below.

Michel, a psycho-analyst, falls asleep while listening to his patient Olga, a kleptomaniac and a sexual pervert, tell him how she likes her husband beating her. When he wakes up, he finds Olga having been choked to death. He now has to deal with a body, with Olga's rich husband who thinks she stole money from him, and with all his patients' insanity that haunts him. Written by Loic <lhenrygr@yahoo.fr>

Esther and the King 1960 - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 stars

Finally a version of Esther and the King a little more entertaining than "One Night with the King"or "Esther and the King 2006"that were both reviewed on this blog.Released in 1960,and running 109 minutes, back when they regularly made adaptations of Bible stories with great liberties,we get this Raul Walsh produced and directed version of the story that is the root of the Hebrew Holiday of "Purim".Again a major issue of not mentioning her real name of "Hadassah"but thats par for these old adaptations. You have to decide would you rather these or none at all?? Since I've reviewed "Ben-Hur"and"The Ten Commandments" and "Ivanhoe" amongst others,I think you know my stand on that. This movie also a flaw that I can't really buy, Richard Egan as King Ahasuerus  but  Joan Collins as Esther more than offsets that and  Sergio Fantoni as Haman is slimy enough. There's a little luridness quality in some parts due to a early assistant director by the name of Mario Bava. However, all things included,I enjoyed it more than the other two films that tell the story. So for all the above reasons I had to take 1 and 1/2 stars off.No trailer this time because I couldn't find one,BUT you can watch the whole movie and the URL following the picture. I hope you already know your biblical story of Hadassah who marries King Ahasuerus of Persia and save her people from slaughter.

Singin' in the Rain (1952) - 5 stars out of 5 stars

Unlike "American in Paris"which I reviewed on this blog, this film is as good as I remembered and I'm sure thats why Kubrick used the song in his film"Clockwork Orange"which was also reviewed on this blog.Released in 1952 and running 103 minutes,it's has more for the great Gene Kelly to do and reminds us how truly great Donald O'Connor was and americas sweetheart of that time,Debbie Reynolds. So strong is the light of those three you almost don't even realize that wonderful and sexy dancer  Cyd Charisse appears near the end of the film or the small role that Rita Moreno has and even that veteran actress Jean Hagen. Its almost a perfect film.Even the story is cool.A bucket list film for musical and classic Hollywood cinema buffs.Oh and by the way, what Donald does in one off the wall dance maneuver I have only seen done two other times.By dance GOD Fred Astaire and Baseball/Football player Bo Jackson.Reason enough to see the film for the magical move. Its in a little number called "Make em laugh"Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary below.

Don has worked hard to get where he is today, with his former partner Cosmo. When Don and Lina's latest film is transformed into a musical, Don has the perfect voice for the songs. But Lina - well, even with the best efforts of a diction coach, they still decide to dub over her voice. Kathy Selden is brought in, an aspiring actress, and while she is working on the movie, Don falls in love with her. Will Kathy continue to "aspire", or will she get the break she deserves ? Esther And The King - 2006 - 2 1/2 stars out of 5 stars

After reviewing "One night with the King"which is the story of Esther I decided to check out the two films actually named Esther and the King. This one released in 2006 and running only 62 minutes is 50/50 at best. Musically its no "Jesus Christ Superstar"also reviewed on this blog.It also is made in a modern times / biblical telling style which I am not really that crazy about. However it is passable considering all the trash out there for parents who want to have a biblical film for young kids to watch without the violence.
So not for me BUT there is a large audience hungering for movies like this so indulge.Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary below.Oh by the way,no mention her name was Hadassah.

When a modern-day girl named Amelia (Lauren Faber) faces a big challenge in her life, her mother (Lori Broadhead) teaches her about the power of fasting by sharing the story of a heroine from the Bible. Esther (Summer Naomi Smart), an orphan raised by a relative named Mordecai (Marvin Payne), is chosen from all the maidens in the land to become queen. While becoming a queen is where most fairy tales end, this is just the beginning of the true story of this courageous woman who must risk her life to save her people from a treacherous plan of the charmingly wicked prince Haman (Jeff Stevens). Through reliving the story of Esther, Amelia gains an understanding of the power of fasting and how it can help her learn courage.

The French Connection - 4 stars out of 5 stars

One of the best cars scenes ever filmed,if not the best solo car chasing a elevated train EVER !!! ( thats before CGI kiddies)Thats the highlight of this 1971 classic NYC cop film that runs 104 minutes.
The only reason to take 1 star off is the dating of the film and the ignoring of really, and I mean REALLY stretching the persona of a NYC cop.Still it was based on a real life case and that cop,Eddie Egan has a small role as the cop in charge of the films Popeye Doyle, played by Gene Hackman, that I guess is supposed to be him in some sort way??
Anyway,it rocks with just enough action to off set the otherwise boring stakeouts and hum drum daily life of a cop.If you liked the Godfather and films of that like,( I do) that you should see the other raw side of those who hunt them. Not PC at all and could never be made today.See it.Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary below.Oh it spawned a squeal but I don't remember it at all.

William Friedkin's gritty police drama portrays two tough New York City cops trying to intercept a huge heroin shipment coming from France. An interesting contrast is established between 'Popeye' Doyle, a short-tempered alcoholic bigot who is nevertheless a hard-working and dedicated police officer, and his nemesis Alain Charnier, a suave and urbane gentleman who is nevertheless a criminal and one of the largest drug suppliers of pure heroin to North America. During the surveillance and eventual bust, Friedkin provides one of the most gripping and memorable car chase sequences ever filmed. Written by Tad Dibbern <DIBBERN_D@a1.mscf.upenn.edu>

One Night with the King - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 stars

Long ago back in the 60's I saw my first "Biblical"film.A 1960 film called "Esther and the King"and I was not impressed at all.Now I have seen this clip which is according to the Bible, the same story. In this case it is a better telling BUT maybe because of all the "in court behind the scenes" intrigues it makes for a very tedious story at best. Still its worth a view for the acting is fine although I was not that impressed with  Luke Goss as King Xerxes  but in a  opening sequence gave us  Peter O'Toole as Samuel, the Prophet ,who seemed to be right off the set of "Troy"which I reviewed on this blog, It was fun checking out the other very familiar faces in the cast.Still its the story that counts and this one is just too political for me,but, good for family viewing as it is a biblical telling. So do check out this 2006 release that runs 123 minutes if you want more than "cartoons"for your children and includes a religious "Biblical"background.Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary is below.

"One Night With The King" chronicles the life of the young Jewish girl, Hadassah, who goes on to become the Biblical Esther, the Queen of Persia, and saves the Jewish nation from annihilation at the hands of its arch enemy while winning the heart of the fiercely handsome King Xerxes. Bel Ami - 2 1/2 stars out of 5 stars

Somewhat disappointing considering a real interesting cast which is the resin I checked out this 2012 release that runs 102 minutes.Sadly that is really the only reason to see this film and its why I could only give it a 50/50 rating of 2 1/2 stars. The story is pure debauchery in turn of the century 19th century Paris for a returning soldier who goes into private life and very forbidden loves. However the casting is very interesting and they all work fine with this crappy material.Robert Pattinson,Uma Thurman,Christina Ricci and Colm Meaney lead a very competent cast and the only reason to see this film when none other are available.Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary below.

Georges Duroy is a penniless soldier returning from war. He travels to Paris in a search for ways to improve his social and financial status. He uses his wit and powers of seduction to charm wealthy women. Written by Anonymous

Rock of Ages - 1 star out of 5 stars

My policy is to only review a film I can recommend if only a little even. However this is I believe the 3rd film so repulsive in its casting, story and values that I just have to warn you stay away or you may just die of boredom and bad taste. So why even 1 star??? THAT's the reason I warning you.The music is a fabulous mix of hits and thats the "hook"to get you to see this film of quaint heavy metal debauchery??PLEASE !!!!
Oh and the casting,3 stink more then the rest,Tom Cruse,Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin and no one really shines.Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary below. You have been warned, run, run, away…………

Set in 1987 Los Angeles, Drew and Sherrie are two young people chasing their dreams in the big city. When they meet, it's love at first sight, though their romance will face a series of challenges. Written by Anonymous

Back to the Future - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 stars

OK,I admit I wasn't thrilled when I first saw this 1985 release that runs 116 minutes. However over the years I've begun to see it quite differently. As a pure sci-fi time travel film,no,it not up to par,but add a story about reverse family "raising"and superb  acting from a well cast group, and its a very different and unique film.Michael J. Fox as our time traveler and Lea Thompson as his "mom" and even Christopher Lloyd as a scientist are what trully make this film work. However the science is still silly.Thats why I took 1 and 1/2 stars off. Delorean and Toyota cars in the movie, since the movie is a homage to the 50's,really??? What happened to GM or Ford??
I really remember nothing about the two sequels this film spawned but I will revisit them shortly.
Its weird in many respects,a kid telling dad what to do,having his mom"hot"for him, skateboarding when it was still "skate boxes"and rock and roll and the counter scene with "tab"or "pepsi free" are cute enough even the terrorist references work eerily well.
So try it again,I did,and enjoy it more today than yesterday.Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary is below.

A teenager is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his friend, Dr. Emmett Brown, and must make sure his high-school-age parents unite in order to save his own existence.

The Tuskegee Airmen - 5 stars out of 5 stars

There is a reason HBO films had a rep for make movies that were ,well, not what Hollywood was making, yet what the public needed. This is such a film.I reviewed Red Tails on this blog, and enjoyed it,BUT as I stated it was a little"safe"for the box-office.This is NOT.Far sadder and shameful in the depictions of the disgraceful treatment these WW11 black airman faced.Think of a hundred Jackie Robinson's,who as a Army officer went thru much of the same BEFORE he played Baseball. But this movie is NOT about him.
The mostly all black cast is well cast and recognizable and it would seem unfair to name but a few,so I won't .For this film had a true repertory  feeling.
My favorite scene was when Mrs Roosevelt has a spare of the moment flight at the hands of Lt.Lee and that signals that this group of pilots have finally been accepted to a certain degree,at least to now go oversees at least. In the end most of the airman would probably admit that the destination was worth the rocky ride to get there. They are better men than me,for I would have blown that road up !!!! Thats why their story must always be told and remembered and indeed, celebrated as we do Jackie's.Released in 1995 and running 106 minutes, the trailer URL follows the picture and a short IMDB summary below.
