Brian's Song - ( 1971 ) - 4 1/2 stars out of 5 stars

OK the ultimate TV sports get out your hanky film.Legendary and TRUE.Besides the football theme there is a civil rights theme as well. The first time a black and white roomed together in the NFL.I understand ABC redid this film later but this is the one that everyone saw if you were alive in 1971 and old enough to see TV.James Caan plays the title character Brian Piccolo one year before the release of "The Godfather".What a contrast in roles and cements him as a truly great actor.Sexy Billy Dee Williams plays Gale Sayers with the confidence needed in what may be HIS best role ever. It's a story of"man"love in the best light of competition  and respect.Release in 1971 for TV broadcast its a short 73 minutes and a 2 hanky final.I only took 1/2 star off because it was TV after all,not big budget, but the football clips are priceless.Trailer URL follows the pix and a IMDB summary below.SEE THIS FILM !!!!

Gale Sayers joins the Chicago Bears and is befriended by Brian Piccolo, an over-achieving running back. Although they compete for the same spot on the team, and despite the fact that Sayers is black and Piccolo white, they become roommates on the road and very close friends, especially when Sayers is injured and Piccolo helps his recovery. Later, they and their wives must both deal with the harsh reality of Piccolo's cancer. Written by Jerry Milani <jmilani@ix.netcom.com>
