Full Metal Jacket - 4 stars out of 5 stars

Stanley Kubrick's 1987 film that runs 116 minutes is both engrossing and controversial in its treatment of the vietnam war and marine boot camp. Thus 1 star off since I wasn't a marine nor a vietnam vet. That said, its a hell of a ride. Lines like"me love you long time"and others like"only steers and queers come from Texas"first were uttered in this film, and many many more. It's also sometimes hard to watch but thats Kubrick,he never pulls a punch. If you want a little insight into that era,try this film.Noteworthy performance by a real ex marine drill instructor turned actor by this film,R. Lee Ermey as Gny. Sgt. Hartman.Trailer URL follows the pix and a IMDB summary below.Great music soundtrack from that era as well.

A two-segment look at the effect of the military mindset and war itself on Vietnam era Marines. The first half follows a group of recruits in boot camp under the command of the punishing Gunnery Sergeant Hartman. The second half shows one of those recruits, Joker, covering the war as a correspondent for Stars and Stripes, focusing on the Tet offensive. Written by Scott Renshaw <as.idc@forsythe.stanford.edu>
