The French Lieutenant's Woman - 4 stars out of 5 stars

One doesn't see a film inside a film very often, and even less when its well done.Stunning mix of Victorian England set piece and modern day tied together by a romance of the two stars that extends off camera.Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons are fantastic as the two actors who have a torrid forbidden love affair in the Victorian film and then carry it into their off camera lives.Released in 1981 and running 124 minutes,my main issue with the film was as good as the "on screen"affair was,it lacked the same"off screen" intensity and I sometimes wished the whole film was just the on screen movie, period. Thus I had to take 1 star off.Still, you have to like period pieces and if you do,with your tragic romance, you should enjoy this film.Trailer URL follows the picture and a IMDB summary below.

A film is being made of a story, set in 19th century England, about Charles, a biologist who's engaged to be married, but who falls in love with outcast Sarah, whose melancholy makes her leave him after a short, but passionate affair. Anna and Mike, who play the characters of Sarah and Charles, go, during the shooting of the film, through a relationship that runs parallel to that of their characters.
